Installing Eudora, and running its scripts

  1. Copy the Eudora into a temporary directory, and run it. Double click on the
file using file manager. Run the setup.exe file in this directory
through windows by choosing file, run, from the program manager.
Follow instructions on the screen till the icons and the program group
     are created.

  2. After extracting udorascript.zip copy the four files

	a.) serial.end
	b.) serial.nav
	c.) serial.mod, and
	d.) serial.mid

in the folder where Eudora is installed.

  3. Once that is done, you can start Eudora. A dialog box, titled Options
should open up. If, for some reason, it doesn't, just click on tools,
     options, to set up eudora.

  4. In Getting started, enter your POP account. For example, an account
with the userid of kunalp at VSNL will have his POP account as
     kunalp@giasbmc.vsnl.net.in.
Under Real Name, you can enter your real name here! eg. Kunal Parikh

  5. For connection method, use dial up if you want to dial up through your
shell account, and ppp if you are going to use a tcp/ip - slip or ppp
     account.

  6. Under Personal Information, you can enter a different return address
if you so desire. The return address is where the replies to any
message you send will go to.

  7. Your dialup username is the userid for your shell account. In the
     above example, it is kunalp.

  8. SMTP is the server which handles outgoing messages. For VSNL, student
server, at Bombay it is giasbmc.vsnl.net.in or giasbma.vsnl.net.in

  9. You can enter your phone number or finger address if you want.

 10. Under checking mail, choose your options, and you may use passwords as
the authentication style. You could also choose whatever options you
want in sending mail. Just one thing... Do not check send
immeadiately. What would happen is then, Eudora will send each message
when you finish typing one. You would rather like to send all queued
     messages in one go.

 11. In attachments, since mostly, everyone uses MIME to send binaries, you
may use this. Be sure to specify a directory for your attachments.

 12. Choose options in fonts and display, pretty simple, really. If you
have a sound card, you can choose a sound file that will be played
everytime you have new mail! coooool...

 13. Well, in the dialup options, Do Not Choose a Modem, even if your modem
is listed there. Just choose " * " as the modem. The same goes for the
Service Provider. Also, make sure that you choose either 9600 or 19200
as your baud. Sometimes, I have found problems while using 14400. You
can, if you prefer, add your modem initialisation string and dialup
string in the script file called serial.mod

The Flow control is hardware. Also, do remember to check CRLF
processing and show trace window. Showing the trace window makes life
easier, lets you know whats happening.

The Script files...

  1. I have purposely kept serial.nav as a Blank File. You wouldn't need
it if you a shell user at VSNL. But, do not delete it, as then, Eudora
will not be able to dial in.
  2. Thats all there is to it. The script files change according to where
     you have your mail account.
